What really happened to ancient Dwarka? Was the legendary city of Shri Krishna actually submerged beneath the Arabian Sea, and what does archaeology tell us about the mystery?

Dwarka is one of the most fascinating names in the history and traditions of India.

According to Hindu tradition, Dwarka was the magnificent city associated with Shri Krishna Ji Maharaj.

But beneath the waters near modern Dwarka, archaeologists have also investigated ancient structures, stone anchors and other archaeological remains.

So where does tradition end and archaeology begin?

And what actually happened to the ancient settlements along this coastline?

Watch the National Geo History documentary below and explore the mystery of the submerged city of Dwarka.

The Legendary City of Dwarka

For thousands of years, Dwarka has been remembered as an extraordinary city associated with Shri Krishna.

Traditional Hindu accounts describe a magnificent city established on India’s western coast.

The story of its eventual submergence has made Dwarka one of the most famous lost-city traditions in South Asia.

UNESCO’s Silk Roads Programme notes that Dwarka is traditionally associated with Krishna and that underwater archaeological investigations have uncovered remains and artefacts in the region.

But an important question remains:

What can archaeology actually tell us?

Where Is Dwarka?

Modern Dwarka is located in Gujarat on India’s western coast.

The city sits beside the Arabian Sea, in a region where coastal settlements and maritime activity developed over long periods.

Its location is significant because the sea connected ancient communities with wider trading networks.

For archaeologists, this means Dwarka is not only a religious and cultural location.

It is also an important archaeological landscape.

What Was Found Underwater?

Marine archaeological investigations around Dwarka have reported several types of remains.

These include:

  • Stone structures
  • Stone anchors
  • Pottery
  • Architectural fragments
  • Other archaeological material

Earlier marine archaeological work reported submerged walls and other structures around Dwarka and Bet Dwarka. A CSIR-NIScPR record of S. R. Rao’s research describes submerged fortification walls, rock-cut slipways, a stone jetty and stone anchors among the reported discoveries.

These discoveries provide evidence that ancient people used this coastal environment.

But they do not automatically establish that every submerged structure is the exact city described in traditional accounts.

That distinction is essential when investigating the mystery of Dwarka.

The Stone Anchors

Among the most interesting discoveries associated with underwater Dwarka are stone anchors.

Anchors are important archaeological evidence because they can reveal maritime activity.

A concentration of anchors can suggest that ships were using a coastal location for transportation, trade or other activities.

This supports the idea that the Dwarka region was connected with ancient seafaring.

It also raises another question:

Could ancient Dwarka have been an important maritime centre?

Was the City Really Submerged?

This is where the mystery becomes complicated.

Ancient coastlines can change.

Sea levels can fluctuate.

Erosion can destroy coastal structures.

Storms and currents can move archaeological material.

And settlements can be abandoned and later covered or submerged.

Researchers therefore need to determine whether underwater remains represent:

A settlement that was gradually submerged,

structures destroyed by coastal processes,

material moved by waves and currents,

or multiple settlements from different periods.

The evidence is not necessarily a simple story of one city suddenly disappearing beneath the sea.

What Does Archaeology Say About the Date?

Dating the submerged remains is one of the most important challenges.

Different archaeological investigations have produced different interpretations of the material and structures found around Dwarka and Bet Dwarka.

UNESCO notes that the dating and interpretation of some submerged remains has been debated.

A 2024 historical review in The Indian Express also reported that later ASI underwater investigations raised questions about whether some structural remains found on the seabed were still in their original positions, making precise dating difficult.

This is why it is better to describe Dwarka as an archaeological mystery under investigation rather than claim that archaeology has definitively proved every element of the traditional story.

Dwarka and Shri Krishna

For devotees, Dwarka has a significance that goes far beyond archaeology.

It is one of the important sacred places associated with Shri Krishna.

The traditional story describes Dwarka as a city established after Shri Krishna left Mathura.

According to the tradition, the city eventually disappeared beneath the sea.

Archaeology approaches the subject differently.

It examines physical remains, dating evidence, settlement layers, artefacts and environmental changes.

The fascinating part is that both the traditional story and the archaeological discoveries have kept Dwarka at the centre of historical curiosity.

The Search Is Still Continuing

The mystery of Dwarka has not simply disappeared into history.

In February 2025, the Archaeological Survey of India launched another phase of underwater exploration off the coast of Dwarka, including investigations near the Gomati Creek. The ASI said the renewed work was part of its effort to study and protect India’s underwater cultural heritage.

That means the story is still developing.

Future archaeological work may provide additional information about:

  • Ancient settlements
  • Maritime activity
  • Coastal changes
  • Underwater structures
  • Trade networks
  • The chronology of the region

And perhaps some of today’s unanswered questions will eventually have clearer answers.

So, What Really Happened to Dwarka?

There is no single archaeological answer that explains every part of the Dwarka tradition.

What we do know is that the Dwarka region contains evidence of ancient human occupation and maritime activity, including underwater archaeological remains.

What remains debated is exactly how old particular remains are, how they relate to different settlement phases, and whether they correspond directly to the Dwarka described in ancient Indian traditions.

That is what makes this story so compelling.

The city exists in tradition.

Archaeological remains exist beneath the water.

But the complete connection between the two remains a subject of investigation.

A City Lost Beneath the Sea?

Imagine an ancient settlement standing beside the western coast of India.

Ships arriving from across the Arabian Sea.

Merchants moving goods.

People building stone structures along the shore.

Generations passing.

Then the coastline changes.

Structures disappear.

The sea covers parts of the ancient landscape.

Thousands of years later, archaeologists return to search beneath the waves.

This is the story that makes Dwarka one of India’s most fascinating archaeological mysteries.
